Who Are We?

The Dobson Underwater Robotics Team (DURT) started in early February at Dobson High School, with the purpose of designing and building a robot for the National Underwater Robotics Challenge (NURC). The fact that Dobson High School was completely lacking in both engineering classes of any kind and a competitive robotics program, there was a gap to fill, justifying the establishment of DURT. The team provides a unique STEM opportunity for students of all backgrounds. The team is student-led, with all aspects of the team being managed among the individuals.

The Dobson Robotics Club

The Dobson Applied Robotics Team (DART) is the planned successor to DURT, that being a club or a team competing in future events. With DURT having started in the second semester of the school year, focusing on NURC was a logical step. However, with an expanded time frame of two semesters next school year, there is the opportunity to work on additional projects, hence the more general name.

Our Journey

6 Feb.

The team has its first meeting after its founding and we discuss the rules and objectives of the compeition. We make a table to determine what objectives are essential.

The team held its first fundraiser, organizing a bake sale in Rancho Del Mar park. Lemon bars, lemonade, brownies, sodas, and cookies were sold to raise a total of $184.

27 Feb.

The team did component testing, where the bilge pumps were tested for their capabilities as thrusters.

28 Feb.

The motors were then tested with propellors to see if the speed increase was something worth considering.

A majority of the parts arrive so we are able to begin tracking parts of the robot and soon begin the phases of construction.

The next day we begin the construction of the enclosure frame that, inside, will contain all the electrical compoenents that make the robot function.
